Hayabusa2: Sample return mission from C-type asteroid Ryugu

Presenter: Shogo TACHIBANA
Abstract:
Hayabusa2 is an asteroid exploration mission to return surface samples of a near-Earth C-type asteroid Ryugu. The spacecraft succeeded two landing operations for sample acquisition, and it will return to Earth with samples late 2020. Returned samples will be investigated to understand the evolutionary history of the Solar System from 4.56 Gyr ago to the present by combining results from laboratory examinations of the returned samples with remote-sensing datasets. Water-containing minerals and organics are one of the analytical targets to discuss the delivery of volatiles to the proto Earth from C-type asteroids.
